Pruning

Pruning of plants is a task that gardeners are tackling regularly as a part of garden maintenance.

Adapting the notion of "prevention is better than cure" leads to the start of pruning garden plants early. The main aims are to shape/structure, promote healthy growth and remove dead or diseased plant parts.

Setting pruning objectives, selecting the correct pruning technique, using the appropriate tools, and ensuring safety are important steps in the pruning process.

Small to medium size trees require different pruning than shrubs.

Thinning is a pruning technique for shrubs that aims to invigorate old plants or to reduce density.

Certain shrubs such as viburnum, spiraea, and other cane-type plants require year round pruning to maintain size.

Reducing plant size and hedging are also pruning objectives that require time for plants to adjust.

    1. Yes, the pruning principles remain the same. The main difference is the time of the year that pruning is carried out and the pruning objectives. Deciduous shrubs and trees are pruned in winter aiming to restructure branches and control/restrict growth. Evergreen plant scan be pruned year around with key timing on flowering/fruiting.

    1. Hand pruners are the most common pruning tool used followed by hedge shears, hand saws and loppers. For tree limbs, use of chainsaw may be needed. Proper and adequate training is recommended when using pruning tools and especially a chainsaw.

Over the past 17 years I have been using Felco pruning tools. They are reliable and with proper maintenance can last for many years.

    1. Regular sharpening and oiling of pruning tools will prolong the life of the tools and ensure proper pruning cuts.

Often, cleaning plant sap with soapy lukewarm water ensures clean blades for secateurs and hedge shears.

Disinfecting pruning tools by using a methylated spirits solution after pruning diseased and insect infected plants is also recommended to avoid spreading pests and diseases.
